Skills for collaborative change

A practical tool setting out the skills and attitudes needed for collaborative and creative problem-solving.

About this resource

In 2015 the Health Foundation and NHS Improvement established the Q initiative – a diverse community that has grown to thousands of people who are working to improve health and care throughout the UK.

In 2017 the Q Improvement Lab launched, providing opportunities for people to come together and focus on specific complex challenges facing the health and care system.

The underpinning focus of this ambitious initiative is to enable health care professionals and patients to connect and collaborate, support each other and develop skills and new approaches to drive improvement in care.

How to use the skills map and guide

You can download the guide and start using it straight away in your teams. If you’re interested in learning more, the following sections cover:

  • What is the skills map and where did it come from?
  • Hints and tips for using the map
  • How it can support you in your improvement work

We’ve also created a poster of the skills map to download (can be printed up to A1 size), as well as individual reflection sheets (A3 size). See the downloads section below.

Who is it for?

Skills for collaborative change is for health and care professionals bringing people together to focus on specific, complex challenges.

It focuses on understanding the skills needed for a team, rather than at an individual level.

How it was developed

Developed in partnership with Nesta, this guide draws on Q’s experience of large-scale collaborative approaches, the Health Foundation’s quality improvement expertise, and Nesta’s extensive experience of government innovation.
